Let’s check-in… How are you REALLY doing?
Each culture has a way of inquiring how another is feeling or living their life. Then, each person has their way of interacting with it.
I live in the Midwest of the US. A typical greeting is “Hi! How are you doing?” with an expected and automatic response of “Good” or “Great.” Even if someone says something different, like “I’m only doing okay” or “Not so great,” the person initiating the greeting usually glosses over the response and moves along in conversation.
That exchange can leave someone feeling unheard and alone.
So, I’m wondering… really, how are you doing?
