“The key is to keep company only with the people who uplift you, whose presence calls forth your best”- Epictetus
There is a difference between those you WISH would be there for you and uplift you AND those that naturally are your true companions in life.
When you WISH, you are recognizing that person may not have the capacity, interest, or ability to be with you at this time. This is a them thing, not a you thing. The hard truth and reality is this – you cannot change or wish this person to be more or do more. The more energy you put into changing this relationship, the more you become discouraged and remain in a negative mindset. Try this instead… look to where you align with that person, how you do connect. They may show up in different ways than in an emotional or need based manner.
Spend time and focus on those that are uplifting. All sorts of people step forward in our time of need and in everyday life. These people may not fill the should category (meaning
-
my brother/cousin/spouse/child
should be there for me). These people may be neighbors, friends, co-workers or people in your faith circle. Welcome them into your circle of support. They want and are willing to be there for you.
Write or Reflect: Who is showing up for you and uplifting you? Who are you uplifting?
