Quotes – Grief has no plot

“Grief doesn’t have a plot. It isn’t smooth. There is no beginning and middle and end.” – Ann Hood

Everyone loves a good story. Well, your grief isn’t it. Your grief is yours.

You know the Inside Out movies? I really appreciate how they talk about the formation of more complex emotions and how they are realized within us.

Now, grief is more than a complex emotion. It is truly a part of your life. There are so many facets that are present. Sure, it’s emotion. It’s intense emotions. And its intensity in ALL the emotions. That means it’s intense sadness just as much as intense joy. And sometimes it at the same time.

It’s also messes with our mind and how we think and focus. You may find your brain foggy or difficulty following directions. This is normal for a while.

Our part in relationships is disrupted. We may want to isolate but want to be invited. We may want to go but want to leave early. We may want to stay busy. We may want to be close to home. You will find a new way of relating. This takes time.

Spirituality is shaken. Finding meaning is truly individual. You may or may not have a faith or practiced religion.

Grief is also physical. Routines have changed. Sleeping and eating has changed. You may be moving more or sitting more. You may have neglected your health as you were a caregiver. You may find yourself fueled on caffeine. Your health is important for you to embark on this new way of living.

Your grief is your story that continues as you live. Sure, it isn’t smooth. Yes, grief will be a part of your life now. The story is what you make of it.
